What Causes Frequent Episodes Of Cough Followed By Gagging In An Elderly Person?

My father, 82 years old, has frequent fits of coughing followed by gagging. Then it stops until next time. Might be later that day or next day. Otherwise not in too bad a shape for 82 years old. Previously had gall bladder remove and heart bypass surgery.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If he has no signs of infection (like fever) then this is likely from either excess mucus in the airways or reflux disease.

Talk to his doctor about checking some pulmonary function tests. If these are normal then he may need a trial of a stomach acid blocker.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Kathy Robinson, General & Family Physician
