Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern and following Ia stepwise symtpomwise managment:
1. Hiccups in an old male (91 years) can be due to to things:
i. either raised blood urea due to reduced kidney function and/or
ii. due to prostatic enlargement causing urinary obstruction and raising blood urea, so ask for prostatic symptoms also.
PS. Urea irritates the
phrenic nerve and thereby causes hiccups.
2. Since Hiccups are persistent and recurrent, ask for
. Blood Urea & S. Creatinine
. X-ray Chest, X-ray KUB
. Gastroscopy
.
Ultrasonography of Liver.
3. Till then:
. Mucaine gel 2 tablespoon 2-4 hourly (
Antacid + Anaesthetic)
. Tablet Baralgan 1 thrice daily (antispasmodic)
. Tablet Alprazolam 0.25 mg thrice daily (if
anxiety)
. At home: breath into plastic bag- held over nose & mouth
. Hold breath as long as possible
. Hold breath, pinch the nose & drink water
. Give ice cold water or ice cream to eat
4..If Hiccups still not controlled
. Inj. Baralgan (
Drotaverine) 3 cc I.M. or 5 cc I.V.
. Xylocain viscous 30 ml to drink. May be repeated after 4 hours.
. Stomach wash with Ice- cold saline + 1% soda bicarbonate
