What Causes Frequent Pain After Gallbladder Removal?

Hello, I had my gallbladder removed 2.5 months ago due to gallstones. For the last two weeks i have been having pretty frequent pain in the same place that i used to. Maybe phantom gallbladder pain? However, i thought it would be better by now and it is not. Should i be concerned? Is this normal? what should i do?

Hi,

Some pain and discomfort is usual after every surgery, which goes by itself. However, discomfort and pain after gall bladder removal should go by 2-3 weeks. If the pain persists after this time, you are advised to see your doctor. When the gall bladder is removed ,special clips are used to seal the tube that connects the gall bladder with the main bile duct. Some times the bile leak into the abdomen causing such symptoms.

Rarely bile duct may be blocked after gall bladder removal due to some injury to duct during surgery and also some other causes like parasitic infections etc. Rarely some intestinal injuries during surgery may also cause pain for some time after cholecystectomy. Post cholecystectomy syndrome may be a cause of the pain after removal of gall bladder, but it is usually after 2 years of cholecystectomy and may be transient, persistent or life long.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
