What Causes Frequent Urination After Surgery For Large Abdominal Hernia?

Hi Doc. My partner (male, 54 years old) just had surgery today for a large abdominal hernia. They put him under general anesthesia and since he recovered from the anesthesia a few hours ago, he s been having to urinate VERY frequently. Small, clear quantities of urine. No pain associated with urination. But this has all started since his surgery earlier today. What is the cause?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I am not concerned with the frequent urination that your partner is experiencing. Keep a check on it. Look out for burning while urinating, or pain. If this persists this, he can have his urine checked for an infection. At this point the surgery, and possibly the pain from the incision sites and the fluids given to him via his IV line are causing him to pee more often.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
