What Causes Full Dependency On The Pacemaker In Heart?

My dad has a pacemaker/defibulator, CHF, and has had numerous heart attacks and stinits in past, most recent being February 2014. He has also been diagnosed with orthostatic blood pressure (i think that is what it is called) He was admitted to the hospital yesterday after fainting and chest pains. Pacemaker was tested and we have found out that he is 100% dependent on pacemaker which has progressed quite a bit since last check. What does this all mean?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your father is implanted with pacemaker. So every time we interrogate the pacemaker, it shows how much of a pace is needed from the pacemaker and how much of the rhythm is his own. If it shows that he's dependent on the pacemaker, then no need to worry, as that just means that his basal heart rate is very slow or having complete heart block in electrical system of the heart.

Hope this helps. If any other queries, do let me know. Will be glad to help you out.
