What Causes Fundic Gland Polyposis Along With Chronic Gastritis And GERD?

I was wondering if I should undergo any genetic testing or have further concerns about a case of polyps. I was found to have 20 fundic gland polyps, chronic gastritis, GERD, a hiatal hernia and 8 hyperplastic colorectal polyps at age 23. I was recommended to have a follow up endoscopy and colonoscopy every 5 years. Just had my last. Gastritis, Duodentitis, and one hyperplastic colon polyp. No regular PPI use. My brother is having stomach symptoms similar to mine, and his GI wants to fully scope him. I cannot find any familial polyposis syndromes that sound like my number and type of polyps and have never been told I have one, but I am obviously no expert. I want to ease my brothers fear and have a second opinion on having an expensive and unpleasant procedure.

Hello,

If one family member has a history of intestinal polyps, it will be most worthwhile for his brother to undergo a colonoscopy.

A person having a colonoscopy needs to know if they have polyps and if they are cancerous or not.

With your personal history, your brother is at an increased risk to have polyps himself.

This is not something to worry about cost. By the way, have you compared the price of genetic testing with that of a colonoscopy?

Several years ago I had polyps removed during my colonoscopy and returned five years later for another, per my GI doctor.

My brother is doing the same.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
