What Causes Gastric Pain And Abdominal Cramps Post Diverticulitis Surgery?

I have been having gas pains , cramping in my upper abdomen region. I get these cramps every day as if I am constipated. I had diverticulitis surgery and a colostomy bag last year and the surgery has been reversed. It seems that I suffer from this pain on a daily basis lately. My doctor did give me some famotidine and I take fibercon twice a day. Can I do anything else?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The issue of abdomen cramps after diverticulitis surgery and colostomy reversal is related to possible intestine transit time problems with propulsive movements being sluggish to the extent needed for bowel evacuation. Apart from antacid and fiber intake I would suggest:
- Plenty of liquids
- High fiber diet
- Prokinetic drugs as Itopride
- Digestive enzymes as Enzar forte or Pancreatoflat to aid in the digestion process
- Dietary precautions as to avoid all spices, non veg, junk items, dairy fat products
- Control of body weight
- Control of blood sugar and cholesterol
- Regular walking, exercises, aerobics
- Avoidance of smoking or alcohol if consuming (which will dampen the intestine activity)
- Avoidance of stress and anxiety

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
