What Causes Gel Formation In The Lungs?

My mother has been hospitalized for pneumonia for the last two months. She s been put on dialysis to see if they can get rid of the remaining water. We were told today that the concern is it may be a gel in her lungs. Can you help me with what that gel is and how can they get rid of it?

Hello,

The gel in the lungs which they have said may be a pleural effusion if they have tried to remove it by dialysis.

Pleural effusions can be caused by a lot of factors like heart failure, chronic kidney disease, malignancy and even common infections like pneumonia or tuberculosis. These factors should be reviewed in your mom's case to determine the cause. And depending on the cause and volume, several measures can be done including diuresis, dialysis, thoracentesis (where they use a syringe and catheter to drain the fluid) guided by ultrasound, or even surgical means. The methods can be done as appropriate to your mom's case.

After which, they can then send the drained sample for testing to determine the possible causes of the effusion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
