What Causes Goose Bumps With Sweating?

I am a 42 year old female and for about the last 6 months I have been suffering with goosebumps/chills while sweating. I am in an office environment and the air temperature is appropriate for an office. However, as I sit at a desk and work I am constantly sweating mostly on the back of my neck, behind my knees and inside my elbows. I have tried desk fans but I am not really hot so I just keep sweating and have goosebumps. I take estradiol and I do not have hot flashes or night sweats. I have mentioned this problem to my family doctor. He checked my cortisol and thyroid levels and they were normal. What do I do now???

Hi, "goose bumps" or piloerection prior to or during menopause is caused due to sympathetic overactivity. The same is true for sweating. You have been taking estradiol which is actually relieving the hot flushes. It is good that your cortisol and thyroid status are within normal limit. You should also get a fasting plasma glucose done. If that is also normal, you should have relaxation sessions to fight the anxiety (that causes the sympathetic overdrive). If that also fails to provide any relief, consult a psychiatrist who will help you out with some medications. You shall be prescribed some sympatholytic drug for symptomatic relief along with drugs to fight anxiety. For, any further query, please write back to the HCM. Regards. Dr. Kaushik
