What Causes Green Phlegm And Pain In Upper Right Ribs While Coughing?

My husband is coughing phlegm sometimes green and other times clear, he also complains of pain in his upper right rib area. 1 month ago our nephew (4yrs) land knee first on him so we believed that the pain was from this. Could they be related and if not how do I treat his cough?

A purulent sputum appears green due to the presence of dead neutrophils.Causes of green sputum could be pnemonia,chronic bronchitis,lung abscess,bronchiectasis.As there is history of trauma to ribs my first advice is to take chest x rsy to rule out any pathology.Once it is ruled out a course of antibiotics usually relieves the condition.
