Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 67 year old female, in very good health except for some lung issues. For a little over a week I have developed a grainy feeling in my mouth in both cheek areas. Today I have noticed that it has spread to the insides of my lips. It feels like what you would expect sand in your mouth to feel like. Any ideas.
Gritty coating all over your mouth and inside lips is at age of 67 is mainly because of yeast infection inside mouth which is commonly known as thrush. It could be because of bacterial build up, dehydration, from irritation of some dental prosthesis and poor oral hygiene.
Poor salivary flow is also one of major concern as when flow of saliva is not there it do not wash bacterial debris and all microorganisms keeps on accumulating and start causing white patches. Systemic diseases such as Leucoplakia, Lichen Planus could be the causes.
I would suggest you to maintain a proper oral hygiene with brushing, flossing. Use daily rinses of antimicrobial mouthwash. Use agent such as chew gum which causes increased salivary flow. If your symptoms keeps on persisting and exaggerating then arrange a visit with your dentist so that proper diagnosis could be make out after testing those white patches.
Hope your concern has been resolved. Get Well Soon. Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
