Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a tooth extraction on Tuesday (5 days ago). I followed my guidelines except I do smoke. I also take high doses of Ibuprofen because that s my go to medication and I was trying to keep the swelling and pain away. So about the 3rd day I started bleeding again but my blood clot was still in there. It s now the 5th day and I m bleeding again. I just put a tea bag in my mouth to try to stop the bleeding and to keep my blood clot. I m worried about getting dry socket. I ve had tooth extractions before and I never bled after the first day. Is it possible the high doses of Ibuprofen could make me bleed more? Or is something wrong?
Bleeding after 5 days of tooth extraction is not normal as the bleeding generally subsides with few minutes and just a few traces of blood can be seen in spit for the period of 2 hours post extraction..
As you did not stop smoking therefore, the healing seems to be delayed as well as the gums around the extraction site seems to be inflamed leading to bleeding..
So in order to check that the blood clot is still intact or not a clinical examination is a must.. For now you can hold a piece of sterile gauze at the extraction site by biting gently from the opposite jaw tooth.. Eat cool foods like ice cream. You should avoid smoking and also do not spit with force.. Take soft meals and do not use a straw to drink fluids..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
