What Causes Hair Loss And Skin Problems While On Pravastatin And Valsartan?
I am 72 yrs old and I have been taking Pravastatin, Hydralazine, Valsartan, for my high blood pressure for years. I also take glimepiride for my diabetes, also for years. Since I have been on these medications my hair has fallen off, my nails break lengthwise and they have ridges on the surface of both hands and feet and i have all kinds of skin problems. Are my meds causing these problems?
The skin problems, hair loss and brittle nails are not due to the medications that you are taking. Do continue to take the medications as prescribed. The symptoms that you are experiencing are due to calcium deficiency. Take calcium supplements along with food that is rich in calcium like broccoli, banana, dairy products (milk, yoghurt), capsicum, sardines/salmons, almonds, beans and lentils, green leafy vegetables.
For skin, take Vitamin A, E and antioxidants. Use calamine lotion and water or aloe vera based moisturizers. You can also see a dermatologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Nupur K,
