What Causes Hallucinations?

I realize this may sound really weird, but I have had this experience two times in the last two weeks. I can only explain it by saying that I have had a brief period of time where I have felt like I wasn t connected to my surroundings. It seemed like I was standing on the outside looking into a conversation that I was having with the person I was with. My voice sounded different to me, my words didn t sound like the words I thought I was using. Each experience lasted 5-10 minutes. Am I making any sense? I m only asking about it because it has happened more than once.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The most common reason of hallucination is Hyponatremia (low sodium level) in the blood, the other causes can be Alcohol withdrawal syndrome, dementia, history of Psychosis or Schizophrenia, Low blood sugar, migraine, etc.

You are suggested to visit ER, get physically examined & get all investigations(Blood tests, CT, MRI, EEG) done.

You may have to consult a Psychiatric as well. Stay away from addictions & drug abuse. Switch to healthy lifestyle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
