What Causes Hard Feeling Under The Fingertips After A Left Index Finger Fracture?

I fractured(undisplaced) my left index finger distal phalanx at the beginning of July, while on holiday in Scotland. I was told by A&E to keep the hand & finger moving, and I should use my finger, using painkillers to treat pain. They gave me a cradle to protect it from being knocked. Since then I have been told by a different hospital & doctors that this was incorrect advice. At no point has any other doctor/A&E other than the first A&E seen an X-Ray. I have noticed during this week that I can feel a distinct hardness at under my fingertip, positioned to the right side, when I press the finger onto solid/hard surfaces. It does not feel like swelling, and it is not obvious from just feeling my finger. Is this normal? Should I ask for a follow up x-ray. My concern is that I may have disturbed the position of the break while following the first advice.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
A fracture of the finger if not well managed may result in poor consolidation with vicious calluses.A finger fracture may not require any surgery.Reduction and contention will do with pain/anti-inflammatory medications.I will suggest you take the X-ray so as to know the exact nature of the hard feeling and if any poor consolidation, you may see an Orthopedist for better management. You may take pain medication like ibuprofen and and use topical pain gel like voltarene if pain intense.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
