What Causes Hard Lump On Sternum And Pain While Deep Breathing?

My boyfriend is 30 years old and healthy. He recently got food poisoning from fish and now has a hard lump at the end of his sternum and it does not cause him pain unless he breathes in deeply. What could this be and could it be related to his throwing up?

Hello and welcome to HCM
Food poisoning is unlikely to cause a lump on the sternum.
Lump on the sternum associated with pain can be due to soft tissue swelling.
Pain associated with breathing is usually associated with lesions of pleura.
A X-ray chest as well as ultrasound is required to know the site of origin and extent of the lesion.
Consult your physician for clinical assessment, investigations and thus further management.

Thanks and take care
