What Causes Hard Painful Lump On The Side Of Neck?

Last night I woke up with a mass behind my jawbone joint and directly below my left ear on the side of my neck. The lump was hard, size of a golf all, solid, non-moveable, painful but it was not hot to touch. It is almost 12 hours later and there is slight tenderness in the same area and swelling is just about gone. I have TMJ, though it hasn t flared up in years but have noticed some tenderness in my jaw on the opposite side and my bite. Had contributed it to grinding teeth when I sleep and figured it was nothing more than that until 3:30am last night when I woke up with the painful protruding bulge on the left side. Your thoughts? I did do the heating pad since about 5am this morning until about an hour ago.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have hard painful lump on the side of neck . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like SIALOLITHIASIS that is formation of crystalline stones in the duct of the submandibular salivary gland which is located under the jaw line. As the duct gets obstructed and when the food is taken salivation increases and due to obstruction the saliva flows back into the gland rather than flowing to mouth causing swelling. The symptoms can also occur due to Pleomorphic parotid Adenoma. You should consult an oral physician and get evaluated and if the stones are superficial that located in the duct in the area of the floor of mouth the physician can palpate it and remove by pushing towards the duct orifice. Deeper stones has to be located by endoscopic technique known as SIALOSCOPY and surgically removed. Also apply warm compresses several times a day .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
