What Causes Hardness In The Neck Despite Taking Levothyroxine?

I have been taking 100mcg of levothyroxine for the past two years. My thyroid has became swollen and it s hard to swallow. I am suppose to leave tomorrow for an out of state trip, however am worried about leaving until my blood results are back. Any suggestions.

First you need to be sure that the dose you are taking is the right one. If the blood test result within the normal ranges, than you need a thyroid ultrasound to rule out any cyst or nodule that may have increased the thyroid volume.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Except of blood tests, you need a thyroid ultrasound to see its structure, rather it is enlarged and if any nodule is inside. Underactive thyroid has a tendency to develop thyroid nodules during the life and an ultrasound once a year is recommended.
