What Causes Headache Above And Behind Left Ear?

I ve been having aching headaches above and behind only my left ear ALL day long for almost 5 week. I had appendicitis 3 weeks ago and while I was on pain meds I didn t feel it but now that I ve stopped the headaches are back. It feels a little better when I lay down but when I get up it throbs really bad. Help!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of headache above and behind left ear which can be caused by many factors like stress, Eustachian tube dysfunction, temporomandibular joint problem, mastoiditis and cervical spondylosis. Migraine can also be one of the reasons for symptoms .

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Put otogesic ear drops in ear. You should take steam inhalation on daily basis. Doctor may order certain test like audiometry , CT scan ,MRI , low and high pitched ringing to rule out conditions like exposure to loud noises , earwax buildup , middle ear infection. Doctor may also refer you to neurologist in case of migraine or other head related problems.

You should take anti inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen and diclofenac. Avoid excessive hard substance eating.
