What Causes Headache And Sore Throat After A Dental Cleaning Procedure?

Five days ago, my dental hygienist asked if I was sick. I told her, No. After I got home from my extensive (she went very deep under the gum lines) dental cleaning appointment (the next day, to be exact), I woke with severe flu-like symptoms: severe head congestion; nonstop rhinitis (I had to put kleenex in each nostril and keep replacing these plugs); headache; dry, hacking cough; sore throat; thick, sore, white tongue; fatigue. The next day or two, I lost my voice and had symptoms of laryngitis. Prior to the dental appointment, I had a full day of other than usual bowel symptoms: not quite diarrhea but constant trips to the bathroom to evacuate bowels, several times in one day. I am still experiencing fatigue. My bronchials are still tight. I have a slight headache; however, I have been reasonably clear-headed for the past 2 nights during the night (what a relief finally). I had to do the plug the nostrils with kleenex just to sleep for a few hours during the first few nights. My protocol (self treatment) has been: ---Steam: breathing steam several times throughout the day to loosen and expel phlegm. ---Hydration: drinking copious amounts of water to loosen phlegm. ---Gargling with salt: garling with salt in warm water. ---Garling with apple cider vinegar: garling with apple cider vinegar as an antibacterial agent for the throat and tongue. ---Hot drinks with spices: several hot drinks with turmeric, ginger, cinammon, cayenne pepper and lemon to reduce inflammation and expel mucus. ---Vitamin C: upping my dose of vitamin C -- 250 mg to 750 mg over the past few days. ---Supplements: continuining with my regular supplement schedule: B12, D3, (I usually take a multi, but I ran out). ---Oil pulling: oil pulling with coconut oil: this has helped to expectorate mucus from the head and chest (I was shocked that it actually worked). ---Rest: as much rest as possible when I am not doing all of the above. ---Prayer: last, but definitely not least, prayer for healing.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

A headache is secondary to irritation of certain nerve endings during the procedure.

A sore throat suggests possible regurgitation of irrigation fluid into the throat, the same should be managed with saline gargles.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel,
General Surgeon
