What Causes Headache In The Post Partum Period?

I am 3.5 months postpartum and I started getting mild headaches a few weeks ago. I thought I was just dehydrated from nursing but taking extra fluids doesn't seem to help. The headaches aren't very bad but I rarely got headaches before this. I'm just wondering why they would start now. Any ideas?

Hi. Thanks for writing to HCM.

Many people may notice headaches after post partum because of the increased blood volume. This can cause dilation of the blood vessels in the head.

This can cause a throbbing pain. Some people may also develop headaches because of the changes in the blood viscosity. Many people find sleeping more than 8 hours a day, taking warm showers, and drinking lots of water useful.

In case the headache persists, seeing a migraine specialist would be a good idea.

I hope this helps. Do reach out if you have any questions.
