What Causes Headaches And Abdominal Pain Followed By High Fever?

My 10 year old daughter has been complaining of a headache and some stomachache for 2 days. Today she started a fever. It was 105. I put her in a cold shower for a minute and gave her ibuprofen after 5 mins it was 103.8. She has been cold all day but has had a bowl of soup and drank 2 cups of juice today Now 30 mins later it is 102.2 and now she is sweating and not cold. What do I do??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The cold sensation is due to the chills that can occur along with the fever. The person has the feeling of being cold though their temperature is actually too high.

It is due to a part of the brain trying to reset the body's temperature as a result of the infection.

The shower is a good idea, tepid water should be used not cold because then the body may tremble more and push the temperature up further.

It is possible that she has a viral or bacterial infection of the stomach/intestines which is common.
You can monitor for any additional symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea etc.

The ibuprofen can be repeated after 6 to 8 hours. You can give paracetamol/tylenol in the interim if the fever is still high.

If the temperature does not respond or she develops any concerning symptoms then she should see a doctor (pain is severe, loss of appetite, vomiting).
Would need to rule out conditions such as appendicitis.

I hope this helps
