What Causes Headaches?

Hi, I have suffered from headaches for a long time now. I can rule out stress. I have been to see a doctor and she has given me Propranolol and has requested for an MRI to clear a few things. If these do not work she wants to refer me. I was just curious to find out a few possibilities. Many thanks

Thank you for writing to us.

A migraine can be an unnerving diagnosis to some people. It is also attached to a life-long medication and this makes people wary of the problem.

I would like to explain to you in short what a migraine is and how you can avoid them. I will add a brief note on the medication used for it as well. Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

A migraine is a repititive type of headache. It occurs again and again and usually due to a trigger factor. A trigger factor can be anything under the sun including the sun. Here are a few examples:
- Cold temperature
- Fevers
- Sickness
- Certain foods

It is useful to identify the trigger factors as you can prevent headaches once you do so by avoiding the triggers.

Here are a few other things that can help in headaches:
Drink lots of water
Sleep well and try to get 8 hours of sleep daily
Eat meals at the right time
Take 1 tablet of Paracetamol when you feel that a headache is about to start
Inhale steam several times a day to clear the nasal passages

The medications for migraine usually prevent an overactivity of the brain or dilatation of the blood vessels. Another group of medications will terminate the attack. Thus, both can be taken to help you better and treat you.

Wishing you good health.
