What Causes Hearing Loss And Numbness In Face After An Ear Infection?

Had ear pain since Wed. Went to Urgent Care Fri, said I injured ear w/ Qtip, said he could see small tears or irritation on back side of ear canal. I was put on anti-biotic drops (neomycin, polymyxin HC ear suspension) and not even 48-hrs later I took myself off of. I didn t like the idea knowing I was taking something that could cause hearing loss, it s rare, but I also live w/ a rare chronic pain condition, so I don t take a rare side effect likely. I have lost my hearing since the drops but could also be because my ear feels very very inflammed to the point of closing. A day after the drops, it felt better, I was doing 1-drop, 3/x s day. Then noticed I was taking wrong, was Rx 3-drops 3/x s day. After starting 3-doses of the 3-drops and I feel worse. The problem is, I can t tell it my ear is getting worse due to the drops or due to my ear seaming to closing up due to inflammation. Just lost insurance today, hence going to Urgent Care before the New Year, but now my face is going numb and really concerned. Worried about the wait & see approach or relying on ear infections usually clear up on their own. Recognize my ear infection could be causing an irritation on my nerves due to inflammation but wanted to seek any opinions to say this is common or I should go to a doctor again asap. Thank you for listening and caring!

From your history, it looks more likely that you are suffering from “Herpes Zoster Oticus” aka Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. You need to be screened for immunocompromising conditions like diabetes mellitus, etc. Also you will need to be put on oral antiviral treatment consisting of valacyclovir. You need to be seen by a dermatologist and an ENT specialist right away!
