Hi, I am having hearing problems in only my left ear. I saw an ENT a little over a year ago and an audiologist performed a hearing exam and it was determined that my hearing in both eyes is normal. However, I continue to have problems differentiating sounds with my left ear. For example, in a noisy restaurant, I cannot hear someone speaking to the left of me because I can make out their voice over the background noise. Also, if I scratch my outer, right ear, I can hear that scratching noise loudly, but if I scratch my outer, left ear, I cannot hear the scratching noise at all. The ENT that I saw a year ago said there was no fluid or blockage in my ear (although my PCP said that she saw fluid in my ear not even a week prior). The ENT thought that I might just have some inflammation due to grinding or clenching my teeth. However, I had a panoramic x-ray done at the dentist about 6 months ago and was told that there is no inflammation in my sinuses or the joints in my jaw. The dentist seems to think the hearing issue may be neurological. I realized that this was in fact a real issue and not something I ve made up in my head when I decided to listen to a noise app to fall asleep the other night. The sounds that I played were a crackling fire and night noises (crickets chirping and such). When I laid on my right ear so that only my left was picking up the sounds, the night noises would disappear entirely and I could only hear the cracking fire. When I took the crackling fire noise away and only left the night noises, I could only hear the low toned insect noises. The higher pitched chirping cricket noise disappeared completely.
