Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter who is 43 this year has developed a heart murmur and a doctor has just told her that she should get checked to see which valve it is in. She exercises extensively running marathons, triathlons ect... could that have caused a problem?
Assuming that she has no symptoms of heart disease, the appearance of murmur at the age of 43 years seem to be due the heavy exercise that she has been doing. Such type of murmur is referred to as "innocent murmur" this is due to physiologic conditions outside the heart and is produced due hyperdynamic blood circulation (as commonly occur during heavy exercise). However, had she been my patient I would have request further evaluation like Echocardiography to rule out any occult or trivial problems with the heart valves.
Hope this answers your query.
