What Causes Heart Murmur?

My husband saw a physician today for a routine visit as we have just moved to this area. During the exam, the doctor noted that he had a heart murmur (stage 3), and we are going to see a cardiologist soon. Just wanted some basic information--my husband is 69 and has never had a doctor identify a heart murmur before. Email: YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Heart murmurs can occur as a person age. It could be due to a valvular heart disease or cardiomyopathy due to various reasons. If it is a Grade 3 murmur then it is quite significant. He will most probably need a full set of cardiac investigations like Echocardiogram, EKG and TMT. His cardiologist will advise the appropriate treatment after your cardiac evaluation. Hope this answer helped. Good day and take care.
