What Causes Heart Palpitations With History Of Hypertension And Diabetes?

My husband is a black, 47 y/o male with history of hypertension and diabetes. He was asleep and was awakened with pounding heart beat, shortness of breath, numbness in left hand, and a feeling of being hot. This lasted for 2 hours. Should we go to DR?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

I would explain that his symptoms could be related to an infection or cardiac arrhythmia.

For this reason, considering his past medical history, I would recommend going to the ER for a physical exam and some tests:

- a resting ECG and cardiac enzymes
- a chest X-ray study
- complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation
- blood electrolytes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
