“Weak heart” can be because of the following reasons:
• Narrowed coronary vessels (like other parts of the body, heart also requires fresh oxygen to keep working efficiently. However, because of
atherosclerosis the blood vessels get narrowed down and thus the supply of fresh oxygen get diminished accordingly). Its like pressing on the pedal to get more speed, when the carburetor is already choked.
• Then there can also be a problem with the electric supply of the heart (activation of the heart to contract and relax through intricate electric pathways), which leads to improper firing off of a spark and something like incomplete combustion. Arrhythmias are an example of this type.
• Flabby heart muscles because of
heart disease, heart failures, chronic
alcoholism, etc.
• Previous injury/ insult to the heart for example from a
heart attack (
myocardial infarction), infections, etc.
• Valvular heart diseases are another cause of weak heart.
• Sometimes a very strong heart may also become a cause of a weak heart as the muscles o the heart become more bulky and start placing more demand of fresh oxygen which may not be possible, as it happens in some endurance athletes, certain congenital heart diseases where
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is involved, and also in certain cases of
hypertension when after having to pump out blood from the chambers of the heart at an increased force, the heart muscles get hypertrophied and thus start demanding more oxygen which may not be possible for the coronary vessels, thereby leaving the heart weakened as a consequence.
