What Causes Heartbeats To Stop During A Procedure On The Stomach?
Hello Doctor, my friend,s Mother was scheduled for a same day procedure on her stomach today but he was told her heart had stopped. She came through the procedure but he hasn t gotten any more information as yet. His mother is in another state so tomorrow he will have more information. My question to you Doctor is what are the reason this had happened. Thank you

The surgery itself is a stressor to the body. Some patients can show a vasovagal attack due to surgical stress.
This causes extensive vagus nerve stimulation and ultimately heart block. Another possibility for stopping the heart during surgery is an anaesthesia drug overdose or side effects.
Many anaesthesia drugs like Propofol, Ketamine can sometimes show heart block.
