What Causes Heavy And Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding?

I am on day 27 of menstrual bleeding. The first 18 days were extremely heavy, changing a super plus tampons and an overnight pad every 2-3 hours and waking up every night to change my clothes and sheets. Plus, numerous 3-4 inch blood clots. My bleeding had owed down and I am now changing.g oy a pad 3 times a day with dark red rubbery cots. I had a vaginal ultrasound showing g a thickening of my uteran wall and blood work with no signs of anemia. Other than birth control what can stop this endless period? I'm so sick of bleeding and feeling tired.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
The profuse bleeding you had seems to be due to Functional uterine haemorrhage ( hormonal imbalance ).
The first line of treatment consists of D&C a miner surgery( after usg scanning & detailed internal assessment.) ... histipathological test of inner lining of uterus scrappings .... followed by needful courses of hormones (oral contraceptives or iuds embeded with hormones)
Not responsive patients need removal of uterus (hysterectomy).
Thanks.
