What Causes Heavy Bleeding After Intercourse?

I bled heavily during intercourse last night. There was no pain and I didn't notice it until my partner pointed it out to me. I stopped taking the pill 3 months ago and have not had a period since (I am definitely not pregnant though) so I assumed it was my period. However, I now dont think it is and am very worried. Any help would be much appreciated.
