What Causes Heavy Bleeding , Back Pain And Nausea After Using Mirena IUD?

Hi I ve had the mirena fitted 17 days ago. After 5 days I got my first period. 12 days later I still have my period with cramps, heavy bleeding, lots of red to dark blood clots, backaches, headaches, nausea, tender breasts, dizziness, dry skin and loss of appetite. I am drinking lots of water as I m always so thirsty. Is this all normal after the Mirena being fitted?

Detailed Answer:
Warm Welcome. I appreciate your trust in HCM and assure you are on best portal on the globe for expert online medical services.

I have thoroughly reviewed health query you raised, and well realize all of those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

I know your frustration and symptoms you are describing are some of the most common side effects experienced after mirena insertion. These symptoms are due to progesterone release from mirena and mostly hormonal related. Heavy bleeding is a concern but will improve with less or no bleeding at all in coming months. Till then, there are few ways to control your current periods.

If I were your treating physician, I would advise you to take:

• Cap. Tranexamic acid 500mg three times daily for 4-7days. It will actively stop bleeding.
• Tab. Ponstan (mefenamic acid) for 4-7 days. It is also help in stopping heavy bleeding and headache.
• Tab. Metoclopramide 50mg twice daily for 4-7 days. It will help in nausea and vomiting.

You may consult your gynaecologist about what to do if you experience heavy bleeding again in future.

Hope I addressed all the concerns you have. Let me know if you have further questions. I will be more than happy to clear any doubts. Keep a follow up to see how you doing.

Regards!
Dr. Ali Raza
