What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding After Stopping Norethindrone?

Hi I only took norethestone for a few days to stop my period while away on a long weekend. Once I stopped I had the heaviest period ever, with clots and it is still going on 10 days later. Is this normal please and do you know when this period will stop. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This is a side effect of Norethindrone. After you stop this medication sometimes heavy bleeding occurs because this is the time-period when your body is trying to adjust with the hormonal changes. No Worries it should stop. However, if you continue to bleed check out with your PCP, you require to get physically examined & evaluated for you need medications to reduce the side effects. In the meantime take iron tonic & nutritious food. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
