What Causes Heavy Periods?

why Am I having heavy periods..Im takin the pill ortho tri cyclen and it is supposed to make your periods lighter..I have read the side effects and none of them say that it makes your periods heavier..Is this normal? How can I make my period lighter while taking this pill? Or, should I just stop taking it? I had lighter periods before I started taking this pill.
