What Causes Hemolytic Anemia In An Elderly Person?

My 85-year-old father has newly diagnosed hemolytic anemia, acquired we believe. I m trying to determine what caused this condition. Mybetriq was the only medicine added to his list in the last year, which is approximately when this condition began. What is the cause of this condition. I cannot find anything substantial on the internet. His other meds are: acetaminophen, aspirin, omeprazole, clopidogrel, finasteride, Mybetriq (added 4-5 months ago), simvastatin, super B complex, fish oil, B12 sublingual. His hematologist says he has an antibody that destroys his RBCs, but that is just a definition of hemolytic anemia, not a real answer, in my opinion.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Acetaminophen seems to be the cause for hemolytic anemia. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a disorder in which abnormal production of antibodies resulting in increased destruction of red blood or hemolysis. Its most common causes include certain bacterial (mycoplasm penumoniae) or viral (EBV or CMV) infections, medications like penicillin, sulfonamides, methyldopa and acetaminophen. So, acetminophen seems to be responsible for the development of acquired hemolytic anemia in your father. Other listed medications are unlikely to be the cause for hemolysis.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
