What Causes Hemoptysis Following A Choking Incident?

My 80 year old mother had a choking fit two days ago, she had a lump of meat stuck in her throat, very little air was getting into her lungs, she went pale, lips went blue, this went on for approx 5 mins, we eventually got her to expel it, ambulance attended, but two days later she is coughing up blood, do we need to get her into hospital? She has had short breath since the choking.

Hi,

Yes, she should visit the hospital for evaluation. This is likely due to damage to the mucosal tissue due to piece of meat leading to bleeding. Also, such episodes may lead to aspiration of oral content which may predispose to infections. So she should be examined once for these things.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
