What Causes Hepatic Hemangioma?

I went in for a full health check about 3 weeks ago and got the results today. I figured I d get the you re overweight, your blood pressure is a little high, and you drink too much - which I did. However, I was a little surprised that the ultrasound revealed what they re calling a hepatic hemangiona. They only advised to keep an eye on it. How accurately are hepatic hemangionas diagnosed by ultrasound? My liver enzymes were within the normal ranges. I ve also had no other symptoms besides slight discomfort in the upper right, however, I m assuming that could be in my head. Should I make an appointment with a hepatologist for a second opinion?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Hepatic hemangioma is benign (non-cancerous) and is mostly harmless. Ultrasound is enough to make a diagnosis. Only close follow-up is required.

If there is a rapid increase in size, surgical removal is required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
