Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I seem to on occasion after swallowing a bit of food develop hiccups which become increasingly more intense, and then cannot swallow and feel in the middle of my chest something is stuck. On occasion to get relief I have had to vomit. It has been suggested that I have an endoscopy procedure, which for some reason I am fearful of doing.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have hiccups after swallowing food the symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as GERD . I would suggest you to :-
Avoiding alcohol and spicy, fatty or acidic foods (bread or meat) that trigger heartburn.
Eating smaller meals.
Eat atleast one hour before going to bed.
Take light walk after every meal.
Keep your head lifted while laying down.
Consult gastroenterologist for proper examination . Doctor may order tests like X-ray of your upper digestive system , endoscopy and Ambulatory acid (pH) probe tests . Doctor may prescribe drugs like ranitidine and omeprazole . Doctor may also refer you to ENT specialist.
Hope your concern has been resolved. Get Well Soon. Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
