What Causes Hiccups And Excessive Salivation While Having Food?

My father is 77. He was eating dinner but stopped suddenly. His food began coming up little by little. I seems like he has a hiccup but then food comes up. He is unable to burp. His mouth is salivating. This has been going on for over an hour. He keeps coughing up small amounts of food.

hi and Welcome to Ask A Doctor service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
In fact if he coughs up with taking food , this should be taken seriously .As this means his swallow is not safe and food can go into lungs instead of stomach that can cause serious pnemonia.
Don't give him any food u till he is able to take it without coughing.
If the problem persists , it becomes important to take him to the doctor .
