What Causes High WBC With Sinus Infection And Swelling And Pain In Bones?

Hello - My doctor recently referred me to a hematologist (I am awaiting an appointment) for high WBC. According to my most recent lab results (completed 12/11/13) my WBC is 12.8, with everything else falling into normal range. My segmented neutrophils are 55, monocytes are 9, lymphocytes are 34, and eosinophils are 2. My lab work completed 11/6/13 was normal except for WBC of 14.7, with segmented neutrophils are 54, monocytes are 9, lymphocytes are 34, and eosinophils are 3. My previous lab work from this year also had high WBC but I don t remember the values. I do not have a history of of WBC before this year. I am 32, female, and suffer from chronic sinus infections and severe allergies, which cause nose bleeds. Low energy, but thats pretty typical for me. It does seem that I am healing slower than I use to. I also have a history of joint and bone pain and ankles swelling My questions are these: 1) Are these symptoms of something that is possible serious? What could they suggest? 2) What should I expect when I finally go see the hematologist for the first time? Thank you, L

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

WBC respond to infection and inflammation in the body. They can also increase due to more serious causes.

The normal range of white blood cells can vary from lab to lab but in general it is from 4 to 11 so your increase to 12.6 is only mild.

With a history of repeated sinus infection and allergies , it is quite possible that the increase is due to these problems but the will rule out more serious causes.

When you do visit the hematologist he or she will review your entire medical history and examine.
Further blood tests would also be suggested.

I hope this helps
