What Causes High Blood Glucose Levels While On Metformin?

Hi I started taking Metformin Er a week ago as I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I had been monitoring my blood sugar for four or five months prior to this as I suspicioned I had diabetes. So far my blood sugar seems on the whole higher than it was before taking the Metformin. When I get up in am before eating it is around 200 to 210. I am just taking 500 mg to begin with and after two weeks i am to go on 1000 mg. Why is glucose level higher. I have been more careful with diet...NO sugar and low carbs. Also, wondering if my other meds might be keeping it from working. I take pramipexole 25 mg to 50 mg, torsemide, metoprolol succer 100 mg, fenofibrate 169 mg ....plus eye vitamins, krill oil, Nexium, baby aspirin, b 12 . Do any of those iconfict with the metformin? During day my glucose can get up to 300 but usually upper 200 A few times above 300 Thank you.

Hi,

Metformin is mostly the first line drug for control of sugar. It has many good effects. However sometimes it may not be sufficient to control sugar where we then add another drug to it.
So you should continue Metformin and observe diet and exercise and repeat HBa1c after 3 months if it was still high we may need to add another drug to it.
Regarding, your other drugs there is no major interaction however Metoprolol may causes some increase in sugar level. You can talk to your doctor about stopping it if not very necessary but don't do it yourself.

Hope I have answered your query.
