Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Fasting blood sugars (after no meals/drink for 8 to 10 hours) and 2 hour post meal blood sugars are the blood sugar tests done to check for
diabetes.Another test is the
HbA1c. All three of these would indicate if a person has diabetes or is at risk of developing diabetes. According to the medical guidelines, a fasting blood sugar of greater than 126, means a person is diabetic.
Medication is supposed to bring it down to 70 to 130 before meals and less than 180, 2 hours after a meal. If 155 is a fasting reading or before lunch/supper, it is too high. If it is 2 hours after a meal, it is good. If it is too high, then you need to get blood sugar control as soon as possible because the longer the blood sugar is out of control the more damage it does. It mainly affects the kidneys (causes kidney failure), heart, eyes (
cataract and
glaucoma), nerves. The medication would need to be adjusted and you would have to try to make lifestyle changes (diet and activity). It has been shown that lifestyle changes can make a big difference in diabetes control.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
