What Causes High Blood Sugar?

Hi I just checked my dads bloods sugar and it is 155. He is 6 2, 240lbs and 48 years old. He also was just recently diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic last week. He just ate dinner about an hour 1/2 ago. Is this number high? If so how much lower should it be? We also know after meals this number increases. Please help.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

Please understand that you need to test his sugars 2 hours after the meals. The testing of meals before this time is going to give falsely erroneous and high reports. The medicines may be stepped up according to these false reports and he may develop hypoglycemia.

Please, always check sugars half hour prior and 2 hours after a meal. Fasting sample in the morning and 2 hours after breakfast is one of the best investigation time for a diabetic. Check HbA1C regularly

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Diabetologist Dr. Riyaz Sheriff's  Response
Dear Sir/Madam,
Welcome to HCM,
Your Dad's value of 155 after 30 mins of food is fine. The diagnostically significant values are 1.5-2 hours after food (Post prandial) and 8 hours after sleep (Fasting). This will aid the physician in giving your dad the correct treatment.
Hope i have answered your query
