What Causes High Fever Along With Cough?

I m a nurse. Axillary temps. Swam at a hotel pool yesterday morning. Fever of 102 last evening, resolved over night. played this morning for 30 minutes then fever returned 101.5 at noon. Now up to 103.5. Has had an intermittent very mild cough this past week, nothing productive. All lung sounds are clear. Do I need to take him to a walk-in clinic, or urgent care for possible chest xray?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the health problems of the patient you are talking about.

It seems that the high fever with slight cough are due to viral infection of upper respiratory tract. It will take a bit more to get totally resolved.

Meanwhile, I advise to:
- drink plenty of fluids (especially tea, water with oral ORS)
- take anti-pyretics you find over the counter (e.g. paracetamol or ibuprofen)
- take anti-histaminic to reduce the cough (e.g Benadryl)
- apply Vapu Rub on the chest and upper back to help with inflammation
- aerosol-therapy at home can also help.

If this does not work, should see your physician to rule out more serious issues like bronchitis or community acquired pneumonia (as you've been visiting another place and staying at the hotel).

Wish fast recovery.
