What Causes High Fever And Swollen, Painful Hands In A Child?

Sorry to bother you but my 5yr old daughter just woke w/a high fever, headache&she s complaining that her hands hurt&that it s hard for her to grip things. Her whole body is hot&as far as her hands they appear to be a little swollen. Is there any reason to be overly concerned? Thank you for your time

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The headache and fever is related to the presence of an infection in the system of the child. The swelling of the hands can be related to an infection or inflammation in the area. I suggest to do a complete blood count for further evaluation. Meanwhile, you can use anti inflammatory medications such as Tylenol. I also suggest to give liquids and electrolyte solution such as Pedialyte to prevent dehydration.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
