This began last winter and stopped as the weather warmed. Now again, the mornings are cooler, and I m breaking out in hives in the mornings. I bathe in the mornings but haven t changed bath soap or laundry detergent in years. Neither have I changed the things that I eat for breakfast. I take Zyrtec daily for seasonal allergies but this doesn t seem to stop it. The hives are always on my bottom, hips, stomach and upper legs as well as on my upper arms. Also, though they always occur in the morning, the time of the morning may vary by several hours. Last year this went on for weeks at a time with few breaks. Thanks.
I can understand your concern for hives in winter season. After analyzing the query it seems that you have developed "Cholinergic Urticaria".
Cholinergic Urticaria is a common condition seen after certain physical agents including cold weather. It is caused by bursting of allergy producing cells known as "mast cells". These are bursted due to certain aggravating factors present in the environment such as cold weather.
For the prevention I always suggest my patients to stay away from the offending factors especially cold.
The long term effective treatment for this is by oral anti histamine like loratadine under dermatological supervision. It is one of the drugs which is not having any side effects and can be taken for long term usage without any problem.
Do not scratch or rub the skin as it can lead to further aggravation.
All the best.
