What Causes Hoarseness And Recurrent Throat Discomfort?

Hello, I have been suffering from voice problems over the last six months with recurrent gritty burns throat. I gave chronic allergic rhinitis, sinusitis and asthma. Swabs and blood samples have been negative. Have had antifungal medication with not much improvement. Seen by ENT who attributes my symptoms to steroid inhaler use, mild fungal infection and mainly allergies. Have had voucectgerapy with little yo no improvement. I talk for a job. What can I do? hi sir/madam,
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.

Hoarseness is generally caused by irritation of, or injury to, the vocal cords. The larynx is the portion of the respiratory tract containing the vocal cords.

The most common cause of hoarseness is acute laryngitis (inflammation of the vocal cords) caused most often by an upper respiratory tract infection and less commonly from overuse or misuse of the voice such as from yelling or singing.

Other causes of hoarseness are as follows:-

1. Benign vocal cord nodules, cysts or polyps.
2. Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).
3. Allergies.
4. Inhalation of respiratory tract irritants.
5. Smoking.
6. Thyroid problems.
7. Trauma to the larynx/vocal cords.
8. Neurological conditions (such as Parkinson's disease and strokes), and
cancer of the larynx.

How to prevent this:-

1. Avoid situations that require excessive strenuous voice use, and if a person needs to project their voice, use a microphone if possible.

2. Voice therapists or singing teachers may be helpful in certain cases to assist individuals with vocal training and voice modification.

3. Smoking cessation can prevent hoarseness or the development of cancer of the larynx.

4. Individuals with hoarseness caused by gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) can benefit from medications and dietary modification such as avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods.

For your throat discomfort causes may be as follows:-

1. Tonsillitis (infection of the tonsils).
2. Strep throat.
3. Allergies.
4. Mononucleosis.
5. Inhaling air pollutants.
6. Smoking.
7. Influenza (the flu).
8. Inhaling through the mouth instead of the nose.

How to get relief From Throat Pain:-

1. Suck on something soothing, like a piece of hard candy, a throat lozenge, or a Popsicle.

2. Stay hydrated and moisten the throat by drinking plenty of water and other fluids. Try adding honey to a warm drink or sip on a mug of warm tea.

3. Try an over-the-counter pain reliever, like Aleve (naproxen), Tylenol (acetaminophen), and Advil or Motrin (ibuprofen). Use in moderation and only for a short period of time.

4. Run a humidifier in your home to prevent dry air from irritating your throat.

5. Create a mixture of warm water and 1 teaspoon of salt per cup and gargle it a couple of times per day.

Hope i was helpful.
