What Causes Hot Flashes?

I am a 55 year old women who has a new pattern of getting hot flashes at night and now during the day. When I was 50 I had a similar pattern, but it went away. Can stress and diet contribute to hot flashes. I know hormones is the number one factor, but it seems that the pattern also is stressful situations in my life that contributes to a busy schedule that leads to a not so deliberate and healthy diet.
