What Causes Imbalance In The Body And Slurred Speech?

My husband 68 years old, has had two separate episodes now. One about two months ago and one, again tonight. He takes no meds but does take vitamins of different varieties. The episodes I am referring to start out with a flushed face, bulging eyes, then a somewhat slurred speech. He becomes somewhat imbalanced and will fall several times. Tonight, he fell 4 times, but did not hurt himself. He is disoriented, but will insist he is not. It is like he is actually drunk. The episode 2 months ago resulted in him falling face first in our bathroom and hurting himself. He had laserations on his mouth , nose and should have had stitched for a puncture in his head. he refuses to go to the doctor or ER. Please advise me as to what to say to him to convince him that he needs to see a doctor.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

He is fortunate to have a concerned, caring wife. With slurred speech, problems with balance, and falling it is very likely there is something wrong with his brain. He could be having strokes or transient ischemic attacks (blood flow to part of the brain is temporarily blocked off.)

These episodes are most serious and their cause must be determined as quickly as possible. Your husband should consider his episodes as warning signs that must be evaluated immediately to prevent a permanent disability.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd,
